One of the main ways to keep your skin fresh and clear is to keep it clean. So, why do most skin care brands put their face moisturizers in jars you have to dip your finger in to get the products out? Not only do you need to make sure your hands are extra clean, but every time you pop open the jar, you’re exposing the product to a plethora of bacteria and microorganisms.

Some higher-end brands like Drunk Elephant, eltaMD and Kate Sommerville already put their products in what’s called airless packaging — and it’s much better for your skin. Essentially, airless packaging keeps products vacuum-sealed from the air (hence the name) and uses a pump to dispense it. You may have seen skin care brands use traditional pumps before when packaging things like foundations and serums. However, this airless packaging can also be utilized in jars — like this one, which recently went viral on TikTok.

Airless pump jars or pump-top jars aren’t only cleaner and better for your skin, but they keep excess product from getting under your nails. Essentially, the jars hold product in the base, as per usual. However, when you push down on the top of the lid, it dispenses product through a tiny hole in the center. From there, you can swipe it off the top to apply it to your face.

Pump-top jars are best for thicker products such as sunscreen, face moisturizers and nighttime face masks. The reason many brands don’t use them comes down to cost — the packaging is more expensive. However, if you have a skin care product that you really love that comes in a regular, schmegular jar, you can purchase one of these pump-top jars on Amazon for less than $20 and refill it over and over again.

For example, I absolutely love my Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 Hydrating Gel Cream — but I’m not such a huge fan of the jar it comes in. I will definitely purchase this airless one from Kleem Organics on Amazon and regularly refill it with my go-to Olay cream.

TikToker @itsamanda.roe first posted about switching from a regular jar to an airless pump one at the beginning of January after watching another TikToker use a Drunk Elephant product.

“So I keep seeing the vlogger girlies with these skin care [products] that have the pop-top, and I really like that because I don’t like digging my nail into my skin care, but I also don’t want to get all new products,” she said.

Then, she shared she got her own “pop-top jar” on Amazon and put her Neutrogena moisturizer in it to prove the switch worked. Since posting, her video has gained over 181,000 views and 19,000 likes. Seriously, it’s genius.

Switching to an airless pump jar is easy, affordable and may even help your skin in the long run. At the least, it will help you get the most out of your skin care products and maybe even help you extend the shelf life of some.
